Nature
Sightings
I
have spent countless hours cruising the waters
of Buzzards Bay, and the Cape and
Islands, with my very good friend, Tony
Gola. Tony
is a Game Manager for the Massachusetts Fish and
Wildlife Department, an accomplished birder, and
an all-round expert on local wildlife.
Together, we have observed countless
numbers of birds, mammals, and other wildlife:
From the Common and Red-throated Loons;
Cormorants; Ospreys; and several species of
Terns, Gulls and Sea Ducks;
to Giant Ocean Sunfish (Mola Mola);
Basking Sharks and Whales.
You never know just what you might come
across during a day on the waters of the Cape.
Three notable nature sightings from last year are as follows:
On a trip to Stellwagon Bank we observed:
Humpback Whales breaching; Tuna chasing
bait; and a 25 foot Basking Shark;
On
a slick-calm day off Gay Head we had a flock
of Stormy Petrells feeding in our chum slick
(Stormy Petrells are small, dark-colored
seabirds that flutter just above the
surface, appearing to "walk on
water"- it was a great site to
see!)
On another day off Gay Head, a giant and extremely rare Leatherback Sea Turtle surfaced right next to our boat!!
While
Nature chooses when she wants to display her
majesty, we have been fortunate to be witness to
rare and truly beautiful sightings.
The waters of the Cape hold untold
natural beauty to all those who care to take the
time to observe.
I am happy to highlight any and all
nature sightings during cruises with my
passengers, as it is my hope you will appreciate
the beauty that is around us.
